Susan began riding before she could walk, showing in her first competition at just 2 years old. She followed in her sister’s footsteps and also began vaulting. At the age of 6 she had already received national rankings in vaulting. Susan focused her passion for horses on riding and began competing in jumping competitions at an early age. She joined the United States Pony Club at 5 and became one of the organizations youngest members. Through the United States Pony Club she received the rating level of HA. Susan began training and selling horses at a very early age. She specialized in retraining racehorses to become jumping horses. At age 14 Susan competed in her first international competition in 3-day Eventing. Susan continued to compete and win at many international competitions. She decided to enroll in Independent Study High School in order to focus on her competitions. This afforded her time to work as an Equine Veterinary Technician where she was able to further her knowledge of veterinary medicine. While working with some of California's top Veterinarians, Susan gained priceless experience and knowledge. With her experience with advanced equine medicine she is able to provide the very best care to her horses.
After high school Susan attended the University of California, Santa Cruz, where she earned a bachelors degree in Biology. While attending college, Susan competed on the equestrian team in Hunter Jumpers. She quickly became the highest-ranking member of the team. During this time Susan also worked as the Assistant Trainer at a Hunter Jumper training barn. As the Assistant Trainer, Susan taught lessons, rode dozens of horses, managed sleep away camps, and showed clients horses.
In 2014 Susan relocated to Kauai, a place that holds strong family ties, with the goal of establishing a lesson and training business. With the creation of Garden Island Equestrian Susan is able to combine her passion for training horses and riders with her experience in equine management.
